AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) — Months before this moment, fourth-year medical students began the application process for the next step in their professional careers, their residency.
Emily Marbas, a medical student about to start her residency in family medicine, said that this is a day she’s looked forward to for a while.
“It’s really exciting and special, you know, we dream about this from the time that we’re little and then worked so hard over the last four years and this is a really exciting day,” said Marbas.
Students aren’t limited to just Texas for their residency, they will be traveling all over the country.
This is a way for some, like OBGYN resident Avery Bramnik, to get to the city of their dreams.
“I’ve been trying to get to Boston for some time now, I wanted to go there for undergrad, wanted to go there for med school but happy I’m here at Texas Tech. Because now it’s lead me to be in Boston for the next four years,” said Bramnik.
This now allows the students to take the next step in a field they’re passionate about.
“I think I’ve just always had this passion to really work with this patient population. Who, you know, need someone to care for them in a very vulnerable time,” said Bramnik.
Although these fledgling physicians, like many, have endured the COVID-19 pandemic, some said it didn’t alter the field of medicine they chose.
“Not really, I think I just kind of went for it I guess. You know, it was hard to really get a sense of where we were going with the virtual interviews but I think that we did the best we could and I’m really excited about the results,” said Marbas.
But Dr. Richard M. Jordan, regional Dean for the School of Medicine at the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center here in Amarillo said that the pandemic gave the students a taste of the real world.
“I think COVID has only underscored that so that they see how important it is to be physicians, nurses, healthcare providers and we don’t think this is going to be the last pandemic,” said Dr. Jordan, “So, I think they’re going to be ready for the real world.”
